Book Picks

We read A LOT of books in our house and we've picked our top 7 favorites to recommend to you today.

I can go on and on talking about how important early childhood literacy is to us, and should be to you. We love reading and have seen so many benefits from the different reading programs that we participate in. If you're interested, I would love to talk with you about them.

1. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin, Jr.
Isaac loves "reading" this one to me. We laugh over the colors of the animals....blue cat?! And he's proud of his ability to recall all the animals in order at the end of the book.

2. Curious George: The Roller Coaster based on the TV series
This is an Early Reader book that I bought in a set at Christmas. Isaac has a soft spot for this "good little monkey" and Eli is able to start reading along because many of the words are part of his sight words/blending words that he's learning in Kindergarten.

3. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault
We love this fun alphabet book (one of my childhood favorites) and the sing-song rhyme it follows. One day I will get around to making an alphabet tree of our own to play with while we read.....one day.

4. Just Go to Bed by Mercer Mayer
For some reason this book has been making an appearance almost nightly at bedtime. ;) I'm just thankful my boys don't give me troubles like Little Critter does!

5. Clark the Shark Dares to Share by Bruce Hale
Clark the Shark gives us frequent reminders that "sharing is caring" and I've noticed we don't have a selfish problem like we used to. Funny how that lesson was better taught by a cartoon shark than myself!

6. Pete the Cat: A Pet for Pete by James Dean
Pete has me converted to a cat lover in this book with his desire to share his beloved pet with everyone who asks.  This is another early reader book that Eli is able to pick out most of the words. He feels accomplished and Isaac enjoys being proud for his brother.

7. Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss
I was never a big fan of this particular Dr. Seuss book when I was little, but the boys enjoy seeing all the funny places Sam-I-Am tries to share his green eggs and ham. We like the silly rhymes and the idea of giving new things a try has Eli feeling invincible when it comes to new food. If only we can get Isaac on that same boat.........
