Patching Jeans

My new (not so favorite) hobby is patching jeans. My boys think it is just the best thing ever to crawl on their knees. In the last week they've been monsters, puppies, pirates, farmers, policemen, builders, and birds. Eli has been left with ONE pair of jeans that have not been patched at least once. So much for my idea to pass on Eli's clothes to Isaac........ hopefully I've bought a little more time with my patching jobs. Here's what has worked thus far:

Just an example of what I'm dealing with. This particular pair of jeans have been patched twice and now this pair has a rip right in between the two patches.

To start, I cut a big square/rectangle of fabric and iron on some fusible interfacing.

Then I iron the patch onto the jeans.

These three pairs of jeans are ready for stitching. I was in a polka-dot mood this day I guess!

My trusty little Brother, ready for some jean patching. Settings are on my longest straight stitch and a low-medium tension. I also like to use a heavy duty cotton thread for these projects.

I start on one end of the patch and work in a zig zag pattern using my backstitching to come back up.

This is the inside of the patch. See the zig zag pattern?

A finished pair of jeans. One side needed the patch, the other is just preventative.

If you have an easier method, do share! (I've tried the iron-on jean patches but they don't hold up to their rough play.)
