It's OlieBollen Time!

I've been building up the courage to make oliebollen for quite some time.

I have problems with frying things. By things, I mean everything.

Stir fry splashes, bacon splatters, and I just assumed deep fat frying would result in using the fire extinguisher. again.

What a wimp.

My taste buds helped me face my fears this weekend as I was craving my grandma's oliebollen. It's been YEARS since I've had some and that's far too long. I remember standing on a chair next to her as she mixed the batter and then spooned it into her fryer. I'd get my own little bowl of cinnamon/sugar and 3 or 4 oliebollen while I watched cartoons in the mornings. She even made me a bucket of my very own oliebollen when I was in college. :) I don't think I shared with anyone.

So I braved the hot oil and fried my own Dutch Donuts and they were divine.

And I didn't use the fire extinguisher even once.

Or burn myself with platter.

Or splash oil on anything.

Yep, awesome!

Ingredients:

3 cups buttermilk
3 eggs
2 cups sugar
2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp each: nutmeg, cinnamon, baking soda
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
6 cups flour
Oil for frying

I made a half batch and ended up with 24 big oliebollen.

Mix wet ingredients in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, sift dry ingredients together. Combine all ingredients in large bowl and mix together. Drop batter by tablespoon into hot grease. Balls will roll over on their own. Remove from oil when cooked through. (You'll learn what they look like when they're done). Drain on paper towels.
Shake in cinnamon/sugar mixture and devour by the dozen.
