24 reflections for 24 years

1. I always love hearing the story of my birth. It wasn't special, nothing "eventful" but it reminds me of God's goodness and how his plan will always unfold right before our eyes.

2. Some of my very earliest memories are from Grandma and Grandpa's cabin. I loved being outside and in the water (except when I was in my "bug phase") and the cabin always reminds me of bringing family together to enjoy each other and God's creation.

3. I became a big sister before age 3 and never (that I can remember) have I wanted to trade Shawna for someone else. And then Derek came along and he was pretty cool too. I enjoy babying him to this day :)

4. My mom wrote down some of my funny sayisms and I still laugh about them today. "Does the UPS truck sell ABCs?"  and  "If I go Mini Golf, does Ben go Mickey golf?"

5. I loved going to school, no I mean really LOVED going to school. I was so excited to start Kindergarten and I have a lot of memories about it- Getting chicken pox, my first crush, having the letter "B" to teach to the class, naptime, the pillow my grandma made me for naptime, my friends, and my teacher.

6. Moving to a new state where I didn't know anyone was hard. I guess I had some problems with the transition, but thankfully I don't remember those things. I remember having a patient, loving teacher and a few kids taking the time to get to know me.

7. I learned how to ride a bike (without training wheels) kinda late and I'm a tad embarassed about that, but at least I learned! I remember getting my ears pierced at 7 also. I cried like the big baby I am.

8. I started Calvinettes at 8 and loved all the crafts. That started the Martha Stewart in me that I still enjoy to this day.

9. I loved this summer-going to the pool, having a sitter in the mornings when Mom worked, and playing with Emily and Leah for HOURS and HOURS.

10. So I got really awkward with puberty at age 10 and I don't have very fond memories. In fact, I've tried to erase some of these memories with no success.

11. I started reading a lot at this age and my report cards show it! My parents were really proud of that.

12. Another move, but just down the block! Jr. High was ok for me. I started coming out of my shell and found some great friends that I have to this day.

13. I remember babysitting all the time- all of my neighbors and cousins. I changed more diapers than I can count and this is when I really knew that I wanted to be a mom some day. It felt so right taking care of kids.

14. I got my first jobs at 14- detassling corn, working at the Long Term Care unit, and working at the grocery store. All so I could start saving up to pay for gas in my car.

15. Ah, high school days! First boyfriend, first awful kiss, first car, first bad grade, and so much more. My days were filled with work, homework, and friends. Some days I miss this kind of routine.

16. Finally I could legally do what I had been doing all along- drive my car! Oh Nelson, you are in a lot of my 16 year old memories!

17. This would have been my senior year of high school- SO MUCH happened this year. I thought I knew what I wanted, but looking back I realize I had no idea!

18. So I'm now an adult. College, on my own, trying to figure out what to do with life. I really wish I could change this year and most of what happened in it. But it made me figure out some things and taught me a lot of lessons that I'll never forget.

19. Oh Dordt College you are my 19th year. That's all I need to say.

20. I wished for 21 so much this year. I still thought I knew what I was doing, but I didn't know a thing. The highlight has to be going to Michigan and then Ontario, Canada that summer. It was amazing!

21. Kendall took me to a restaurant on my 21st birthday- it was the most awful supper I have ever had. Thus starting our horrible tradition of really bad meals on my birthday. He was pretty sweet and made up for it :) AND this is how I old I was when Eli was born, when I graduated college, when I bought my first house, and when I got married. Yes, 21 was a BUSY year!!

22. 2nd year of horrible meals on my birthday. ugh. I got pregnant with Isaac and spent my year figuring out how to be the mother of a baby and a school-aged girl.

23. Still a mom and loving it! And Isaac is born and our family is complete :) God is so good!

24. Today has been a great day and I am so in love with my family. All of them. I could have never imagined anything so wonderful and My God has blessed me in so many ways! He knew from the very beginning that life would turn out like this and it's so much more than I ever could have asked for!

So THANK YOU GOD for 24 wonderful years of being with me every single day, loving me unconditionally when I thought no one else did, and for giving me the greatest blessings on earth!
