Organizing Tips

I thought I'd share some of my organization habits to help you with your Spring Cleaning.

1. Everything needs a home. A place to belong. That way you can return it to its home when it takes a little vacation. Or a long vacation. And yes, I use the word "home" when I'm cleaning, especially when I'm teaching the boys to clean. "Put the train in his home" in the middle of "clean up, clean up. everybody everywhere!"

2. Tip for organized kiddos: start them young! Set a good example before they're even walking, but as soon as they reach that stage, have them help put toys away. It will take a while before they can do it on their own, don't expect too much of them too soon.

3. Re-use boxes and jars! You should see behind my cabinets and drawers- I use everything from Mason jars (my favorite!) to cereal boxes and toilet paper tubes. Cheaper than buying in to all of those expensive organization "tools."

4. Don't overwhelm yourself and take on too much. Start with a small project and work your way through the house. One drawer or desk or cupboard at a time.

5. Go room-by-room. No, you don't have to, but if you're struggling this is helpful. Pick the smallest (or cleanest) room and move from there. Once you finish one room, move on to the next.

6. Use laundry baskets to bring things from room to room. Or another kind of box or basket. Pile things in there throughout the day and at the end of the day, each basket gets brought to the coordinating room and things are put away then. This saves lots of trips throughout the day!

7. And last, my favorite, MAKE A LIST! :) Write down what you want to accomplish for the day/week or in each specific room. I love checking off my list and chucking it in the garbage when I'm finished.

I hope you find some of these helpful. Happy cleaning!
