I do a minimum of 12 loads of laundry every week. I don't want to figure out the costs of detergent, but I'm guessing it's a lot every year. In my Pinterest browsing this week I found a recipe for dry detergent and figured I'd give it a try considering how much it actually costs. (I have to justify "wasting" money if I don't like it or if someone's skin doesn't agree with it). I omitted the OxyClean because I am not too picky about my clothes being perfectly colored.
Ingredients:
1 (4+ pounds) box Borax
1 (3+ pounds) box Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
4 pounds Baking Soda (found in 1 or 4 pound boxes at my local WalMart)
1 container (55 oz) Purex Crystals Fabric Softener
4 bars Fels Naptha laundry soap
Directions:
First, grate/shred/pulverize the 2 bars of soap. Don't let your children around-they'll think it's grated cheese and ask for a bite. ;) Do what you have to do to get the bars into an almost-powder so that it will dissolve easy in your washer.
Next, mix all the ingredients together. I found a giant bucket and poured it all in, gloved-up, and mixed away with my hands.
It took a couple minutes to get it all incorporated, but so worth it!
That's it. hahaha 2 steps and you're done. I poured what I could back into the Purex bottle and then filled 2 ice cream buckets.
This morning I had some help figuring out the costs of this little project of mine. You'll be amazed!
Costs from my local WalMart:
1 box Borax: $3.38
1 box Washing Soda: $3.24
3 1lb boxes Baking Soda: $.54 each
4 bars Fels Naptha: $.97 each
1 bottle Purex: $4.76
Total costs of ingredients: $16.88
Months worth of laundry soap: 6 or 288 loads of laundry (give or take)
