Kendall grew up with these yummy German treats and I found a recipe for them in my Dutch cookbook. ;) They don't taste "just like Grandma's" but they are pretty good!
I now have the coveted family recipe and will try those to see how they compare. Maybe I should round up some taste testers and take a vote on which ones are "better."
Here is the recipe I used:
Pepper Nuts
1 cup sugar
1 cup oleo
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp cinnamon
1 cup dark syrup
2 tsp soda, dissolved in a little warm water
4-4 1/2 cups flour
Mix all ingredients, adding the flour last. Form into little rolls, the diameter of a pencil. Wrap the rolls in waxed paper and freeze overnight. Cut frozen dough into little bite size pieces and place on greased and floured cookie sheet. (See the picture-the little caramel looking things are these bite size pieces)
Bake 8-10 minutes at 350. Store in airtight containers.
We keep them in the fridge so they're nice and crisp.
